July 3, 2014

Talia Rushing, 22, and and 2-year-old Layton Hallmark of Boise are presumed dead after their car plunged off U.S. 12 into the Lochsa River early Wednesday morning, Idaho State Police reported Thursday.

Their bodies have not been recovered, ISP reports: High, fast river conditions have prevented crews frojm reaching the PT Cruiser the young family was traveling in.

Driver Boone Hallmark, 29, fell asleep at the wheel around 3 a.m. while driving eastbound near Lowell. The car went off the road and into the river. Hallmark was able to free himself but was swept out of the car before he could rescue the others, the ISP reports. Hallmark was treated at Syringa Hospital in Grangeville.
