Boise freeway projects to affect traffic beginning Sunday

July 3, 2014

Several Interstate 84 road projects in Boise will affect traffic over the coming weeks and months.

The Idaho Transportation Department is replacing the Broadway and Gowen interchanges and adding a third lane on I-84 between the interchanges. Both projects will add capacity and help reduce traffic congestion. Construction will be completed in late 2015.

Sunday evening, traffic on Broadway Avenue will begin moving to the new east half of the Broadway interchange bridge. The change will begin at 7 p.m., with flaggers to direct motorists from 7 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday. One lane will be open in both directions on Broadway Avenue.

On Monday and Tuesday, demolition of the old Broadway Avenue interchange bridge will take place between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. For the first two to four hours, freeway traffic will detour between the Broadway and Eisenman interchanges due to nearby blasting along the Gowen Road interchange. For the rest of the night, only I-84 traffic at the Broadway interchange will be detoured.

The area will re-open by 5 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, once the demolition work and cleanup are finished.

Broadway Avenue traffic will be reduced to one lane in both directions on both nights.

The rock blasting at the Gowen Road interchange will take place between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. between Monday and Thursday evenings. The blasting will also affect traffic on Gowen Road and southbound Broadway Avenue traffic.

Detours will move vehicles away from the blast zone.

Beginning Sunday and lasting through October, I-84 traffic will be reduced around the clock to one lane in each direction on a 1.5-mile stretch on both sides of the Gowen Road interchange. Eastbound traffic will cross over to the westbound side, allowing construction crews enough space to rebuild the eastbound bridge at the interchange.

Motorists wishing to leave the freeway at the Gowen exit will use a dedicated exit lane after the Broadway interchange. The speed limit on the dedicated exit lane will be reduced to 45 mph.

A second freeway bridge demolition will take place July 11 and 12 at the Gowen Road interchange. Gowen Road and the eastbound freeway entrances and exits will be closed both nights while crews remove the eastbound bridge over Gowen Road. The closures will begin at 8 p.m. and end at 7 a.m.

Exact closure dates, road closures and detour maps will be posted on digital message boards and online at www.itd.idaho.gov/GowenInterchange and www.itd.idaho.gov/BroadwayInterchange. To sign up for email alerts about closures, visit the websites, email comments@itd.idaho.gov or call (208) 334-8005.

Concrete Placing Company and Knife River Corporation, both of Boise, are the contractors for the I-84, Broadway and Gowen interchange projects in east Boise.
