Letter: Pancreatic cancer

July 3, 2014

On Tuesday, June 17, I had the opportunity to meet with Sens. Jim Risch, Mike Crapo and legislative staff for Reps. Mike Simpson and Raul Labrador.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths. It is the only major cancer whose five-year relative survival rate is in the single digits (6 percent). Pancreatic cancer is expected to become the second leading cause of cancer-related death by 2020, according to research.

I am pleased to report that Risch, Crapo and Simpson have consistently supported keeping the National Cancer Institute funded throughout the sequestration and all support an end to sequestration that is hurting vital cancer research funding. In fact, these men have co-sponsored the recently passed Recalcitrant Cancer Act and strongly supported the Department of Defense's Peer-Reviewed Cancer Research Program (pancreatic cancer is one of the cancers listed).

On Tuesday, I asked that Congress stomp on pancreatic cancer by making cancer research funding a priority.

Thank you to Sens. Risch and Crapo and Rep. Simpson for agreeing that this vital funding is a priority.
