June 10, 2014

Provided by the Valley County Sheriff's Office. Emergency workers responded in force Monday to this two-car crash on Idaho 55 near Smith's Ferry. Two people in the vehicle at left died, and two were seriously injured.

A Nampa couple was apparently driving home with their young children Monday after a weekend in McCall when a two-car crash killed the woman and her boyfriend’s 4-year-old son, the Valley County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday afternoon.

Michelle A. Lopez, 21, and Nathaniel J. Ortiz, 4, died in the collision, which happened on Idaho 55 near Smith’s Ferry. Nathaniel’s father, 25-year-old Juan Ortiz, and Lopez’s 5-year-old son Raphael Duran were seriously injured and taken by air ambulance to a Boise hospital. Investigators said the 5-year-old’s injuries are critical.

The crash is still under investigation, and detectives want to talk to anyone who may have witnessed this crash and has not already spoken to law enforcement. If you have information, call Valley County Dispatch at 208-382-5160.

Juan Ortiz was driving the car that investigators said earlier was “T-boned” by another car near Milepost 101. The second vehicle hit Ortiz’s car on the passenger side, a detective said Monday. What led to the collision is unclear, and no further information was released Tuesday about what happened, the other vehicle or its occupants, who reportedly were treated in Cascade after suffering injuries that were not life-threatening.
