Roger Quarles, former superintendent of the Caldwell School District, was named the new executive director of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation Monday.

He replaces Jamie MacMillan, who will become foundation president.

"I am excited to continue the great work of the foundation," said Quarles, who worked as chief deputy state superintendent under state schools chief Tom Luna in 2013. "I look forward to helping carry on the hopes of the Albertson family to make Idaho an even greater state."

MacMillan is the great granddaughter of the late supermarket magnate Joe Albertson and his late wife Kathryn, who began the foundation. Over the past 16 years, the foundation has put more than $600 million into Idaho, much of it for education.

Quarles brings a strong background in business, education and community-building to the foundation, MacMillan said. "This gives our family and me more capacity to have an impact on the causes we really care about."

Quarles has served as co-director of Idaho Leads, which works to build leadership in Idaho public schools. The program is part of the Boise State University Center for School Improvement .
