MWI Veterinary Supply, a Boise-based company founded in 1976 by a veterinarian in Nampa, is eliminating 89 positions across its U.S. operations.

The layoffs included 10 of MWI's 284 employees in Idaho.

"We took difficult but necessary steps to reduce costs by announcing a reduction of less than 5 percent of our total U.S. employee head count," said Debby Ball, director of human resources.

The company plans to eventually close distribution centers in Mauston, Wis., and Phoenix. It eliminated 12 jobs in Phoenix and five in Wisconsin, Ball said.

MWI currently has 13 distribution centers, including those in Phoenix and Mauston.

Employees who lost their jobs will receive severance packages based on their years of service with the company, she said.
