BOISE The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl contributed $50,000 cash and food donations for the 2013 bowl season.
Local nonprofits who benefited from these contributions include YMCA Horsethief Camp, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Idaho and the Youth Optimist Football program.
The bowl's donations in the past year mark the largest amount given by the organization in a one-year period.
The bowl also has joined forces with local companies within the potato industry to donate more than 33,500 pounds of potatoes to charities. The Idaho Grower Shippers Association donated three potatoes for every fan in attendance at the 2013 bowl game, amounting to just fewer than 32,800 pounds given to the Idaho Foodbank. Joining the FIPB for the Strikes for Spuds event, the J.R. Simplot Company and Potandon donated 1,700 pounds of potatoes to Boise's Life Kitchen, Idaho Foodbank, and charities of San Diego and Buffalo.
