Boise State football team adds cornerback to 2015 recruiting class

Boise State defensive coordinator Marcel Yates’ recruiting prowess has landed the Broncos another cornerback.

Ladarryl Blair of South Oak Cliff High in Dallas committed to the Broncos on Monday. The 6-foot, 183-pounder will play cornerback, he said.

Blair will play quarterback, wide receiver, running back, return specialist and possibly defense for South Oak Cliff this fall. He was a cornerback during his sophomore year and part of his junior year.

“I’m a very athletic kid,” he said. “… I like defense. I like hitting people.”

Said Emmett Jones, the coach at South Oak Cliff: “One reason I know he’ll excel at cornerback is he’s a kid who loves to compete. Any time you put him in a competitive situation, he’s going to stand up to the challenge. I hate to say it, but from our program’s perspective, he’s a Percy Harvin-type of player — just dynamic, explosive. He can hurt you anywhere on the football field. He learns quick. He’s a natural leader. He’s one of those guys who is very sudden when he touches the ball.”

Blair chose Boise State over Arizona State, he said. He also received offers from Tulsa, Arkansas State, Boston College, Colorado State and Texas State, he said.

He has not visited campus, but intends to in about a week.

He was recruited by Yates and defensive backs coach Julius Brown during the past month, but he met Yates as a high school freshman.

“Every time we cross paths … you just gravitate toward him,” Blair said.

Blair was impressed that the coaches spent a day at his school checking him out before offering him a scholarship.

“I’ve been talking to coach Brown and coach Yates — they’re real people,” Blair said. “They don’t feed me a lot of this and that. I connect with them very well.”

Blair committed at the beginning of summer to focus on his season.

“I won’t have a lot on my plate my senior year, so I can just play,” he said.
