Five athletes with Idaho ties qualify for NCAA track and field finals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Boise State junior Emma Bates (women's 10,000 meters, 34:06.99) and Idaho junior and Caldwell High graduate Matt Sullivan (men's pole vault, 17-3) qualified Thursday at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships. Several Broncos and Vandals competed Friday, but only junior Marisa Howard of Boise State advanced to the finals June 11-14 in Eugene, finishing fifth in the women's 3,000 steeplechase (10:07.57). Bates will run the 5,000 on Saturday and attempt to qualify for nationals in two races for the second consecutive year.

• Louisville sophomore Brittany Owens (Borah High) finished 10th in the women's long jump with a mark of 20-3.5 at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships on Thursday, earning a spot in the NCAA finals.

• Utah State junior Nic Bowens (Meridian High) qualified for the NCAA finals, taking fifth in his heat and 10th overall in the men's 100 meters (10.21) Friday at the West meet in Fayetteville.
