Theater of the absurd? Governor's debate goes viral

Idaho StatesmanMay 16, 2014

National repute NBC political reporter Chuck Todd called watching Wednesday's Idaho GOP gubernatorial debate his "lunch break obsession." BuzzFeed, Gawker, Politico, Slate and The Washington Post also took note of the tomfoolery.

Serious candidates in spotlight? Gov. Butch Otter and state Sen. Russ Fulcher were an afterthought. The focus was on the bizarre role of Walt Bayes and Harley Brown. Bayes waved wildly and read the Bible. Brown talked about Playboy bunnies and being ordained by God to be president, and offered such gems as "turd in a punchbowl" and "hey diddle diddle, right up the middle."

Demeaning? Statesman political reporter Dan Popkey, a debate panelist, said the attention was unwelcome and "distracted from the serious business of electing a chief executive."

How'd they get on? Gov. Butch Otter insisted the pair be invited to the only debate in which he participated.
