BOISE — The Boise State men's basketball team has received a verbal commitment from College of Southern Idaho guard Montigo Alford. A source confirmed his commitment Thursday evening, and Alford himself confirmed via text message just before midnight.
Alford (5-9, 165) averaged 15.1 points and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 44.2 percent from 3-point range for the Golden Eagles last season as a redshirt sophomore. He scored 10.9 ppg in 2012-13 and redshirted in 2011-12. Alford visited Washington State earlier this week and reportedly had interest from Colorado State, Nebraska and Southern Miss. He will be a redshirt junior next season, giving him two seasons of eligibility.
With Alford's commitment and the commitment of 6-11 Texas high schooler Zach Haney on Tuesday, the Broncos are projected to be at the scholarship limit of 13 next season. Three seniors graduated, and the school announced Wednesday that sophomore Edmunds Dukulis and redshirt freshman Joey Nebeker were not returning next season. Alford and Haney are expected to officially sign early next week.
In recent seasons, Boise State has picked up impact transfers from the College of Southern Idaho in Kenny Buckner, Reggie Larry and Daequon Montreal. Alford attended Summit High in Fontana, Calif., where he was a high school football teammate of current Boise State cornerback Donte Deayon. Between his junior and senior years of high school, Alford ran for nearly 2,250 yards and 30 touchdowns as a running back.
