Bike Week kicks off Saturday: Everyone knows that Boiseans love their bicycles

Idaho StatesmanMay 10, 2014

Bicyclists ride on North 15th Street in Boise earlier this week, ahead of the start of Boise Bike Week.

The Census Bureau confirms it Boise ranks third in the country in the percentage of bike commuters. The study found that 3.7 percent of Boiseans get to work that way. Boise tied with Minneapolis.

What city is at the top of the list? Portland, where 6.1 percent of residents commute by bike, followed by Madison, Wis., at 5.1 percent. Boise has a higher percentage of bike commuters than Seattle or San Francisco.

What's the national picture like? The West has the highest percentage of bike commuters and the South has the lowest. Men are twice as likely to bike to work as women.

Good timing for the report Boise Bike Week begins Saturday with rides to farmers markets beginning in neighborhoods across the city. At 1 p.m. Sunday (Mother's Day), Cyclofemme will feature women (and maybe some intrepid fellows) biking in pretty dresses, beginning at the The Grove fountain.
