Groups inching toward Downtown Boise transit center

Board members for Valley Regional Transit, the Treasure Valley's public transportation authority, are expected to finalize agreements Thursday that will push plans for an underground bus station in Downtown Boise two steps closer to reality.

One of those agreements is with Capital City Development Corporation, Boise's urban renewal agency, which has pledged to put $2.4 million of its money into the project.

Another agreement is with the Gardner Co., the private developer that built 8th & Main — Idaho's tallest building — and now is planning City Center Plaza, a two-building complex with office, retail, meeting and convention space on U.S. Bank Plaza, which the company bought last year. Gardner would oversee construction of the roughly $10 million transit center underneath City Center Plaza. A federal earmark would cover the majority of the cost. Valley Regional Transit would own the transit center once it's complete.

Kelli Fairless, executive director of Valley Regional Transit, said everything's in order — as far as she knows — to start digging out the space for the transit center next month.

Efforts to contact Gardner COO Tommy Ahlquist were unsuccessful.
