Letter: Education

May 7, 2014

Words are toys in the political, media world; no issue has been "toyed" with more than education. Closest at heart to every family are their kids; wrapped in our love for them is every wish for their fulfillment; this means everyone has a political "stake" in education.

Reading the book, "Reign of Error, The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America's Public Schools," by Diane Ravitch, is a way to familiarize oneself with the issues and misinformation fueling harmful education agendas. Public schools are an introduction and foundation to knowledge necessary for developing a fulfilling life for the benefit of the world, the community and oneself. The real education comes as we use the knowledge and abilities acquired during those years; no one exits the last school door fully formed. It's a lifelong endeavor. Unless we continue our own education on important issues ... we continue to be dependent on self-aggrandized corporate, political alliances.

Public funds for education are being pilfered for corporate agendas. But kids, not economic development boards, are the future economy of this state and our country; kids come last in corporate, commercialized education. Please, read the book.
