Letter: National monument

May 7, 2014

Mackay Wilderness River Trips has been leading trips on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, the main Salmon River and Hells Canyon for about 30 years. We own property in Stanley and outfit our trips out of our Stanley warehouse. In between trips, one of my favorite things is to go mountain biking in the White Clouds. I'm glad to hear that the mountain bike groups worked out an agreement with wilderness groups to preserve access for mountain biking. Riding in the White Clouds is world-class.

Let's work together to support a national monument for the Boulder-White Clouds. I think it'd be a positive thing for economic development in Stanley and the outdoor recreation industry in Central Idaho, including Mackay Wilderness River Trips. An economic study by the Idaho Outdoor Business Council also found that a monument would have a positive economic impact. A Boulder-White Clouds national monument ultimately would help put us on the map.
