While reading the April 13 Sunday Statesman article about 2nd District Congressional Candidate Bryan Smith, a light bulb flashed. Why is Smith so opposed to the Affordable Care Act (ACA or Obamacare)? Do you suppose it has anything to do with the fact his livelihood is largely due to preying on the uninsured? His debt collection services, including his law firm, specialize in medical debts and have been estimated by a bankruptcy attorney in Idaho Falls to be responsible for up to half of Bonneville County's bankruptcy filings in recent years. It has also earned an "F" from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for nonresponsiveness. Much of that business could dry up due to the ACA, and even more will disappear with full implementation, including Medicaid expansion.
It is refreshing to know that Smith is living the "American Dream" growing hay and lavender and raising bees on his few acres, but one wonders whether that dream includes tax write-offs for "gentleman farmers" and perhaps even taxpayer-funded agriculture subsidies?
