Idaho Vandals spring game: Petrino impressed with quarterbacks, lines

STATESMAN STAFFApril 26, 2014

— Coach Paul Petrino must have been impressed with the Vandals' final spring scrimmage Friday night in the Kibbie Dome.

"The future looks bright," he said specifically about the offensive line, defensive line and quarterback positions. "If you want to win championships, that's where it starts. We have a good chance to be good at those three spots."

The Gold team, comprised primarily of first-team players, beat the Silver 55-14.

Quarterbacks Chad Chalich (16-of-27 for 306 yards) and Matt Linehan (30-of-46 for 373 yards) shared time on both teams. Each had two TDs and no interceptions.

Wide receiver Dezmon Epps caught 11 passes for 121 yards, while Richard Montgomery caught four passes for 83 yards and rushed four times for 83 yards and two TDs.

"We're so much faster," Petrino said. "Our whole team works so much harder. You can hear the hitting. It's exciting right now - the attitude and the effort."
