Store employees, Boise police work together to catch suspected purse thief

Jimmy D. Leytham, 58, of Kuna was arrested by Boise police Thursday in connection with the theft of a purse from a shopping cart more than a month ago.

Leytham is charged with two felonies: theft by acquiring lost property and fraudulent possession of a financial transaction card.

The investigation began March 14 when Boise police received a report that a woman’s purse was stolen from her cart at a store in the 8300 block of West Overland Road March 14, 2014. The woman told officers she accidentally left her purse in the cart when she returned the cart to the front of the store, and when she went back a short time later it was gone and had not been turned into the store as lost property.

Store employees gave police a description of a man seen leaving the store with the purse, which contained financial transaction cards that someone reportedly tried to use following the theft. Officers pieced together evidence and identified Leytham as being in possession of the stolen purse and credit cards, and Ada County prosecutors issued a warrant for his arrest.

On Thursday, store employees recognized the suspect as being back at the store where the purse was stolen. They called police, who arrested Leytham and booked him into the Ada County Jail. He was released on $25,000 bond and his arraignment is set for April 22.
