Labor workshops focus on benefits and pitfalls of social media

The Idaho Department of Labor is organizing a series of free workshops across the state that will teach employers and job seekers how to use social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter to their advantage while avoiding legal problems.

The workshops will be hosted by Lisa McGrath, the president of the newly-formed media law firm, Lisa McGrath LLC., and by Klowd.com cofounder Justin Foster. The pair will offer tips for job seekers to find work through social media outlets as well as tips for how to build a social network profiles that will appeal prospective employers instead of chasing them away.

The cohosts and a panel of local people from the business community will discuss how businesses can create branding through social media and how to establish standards for company accounts.

The Boise workshop will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. May 14 at the Department of Labor's Boise office, located at 219 W. Main St.

The Caldwell workshop will be from 8 a.m. to noon May 15 at the department's Canyon County office, located at 4514 Thomas Jefferson St.
