Letter: Speed Limit

April 12, 2014

I am writing in regard to the Idaho Transportation Department proposal to increase legal speeds from 75 to 80 miles per hour on the interstate and 65 to 70 miles per hour on state highways.

I would like to know why the Idaho Transportation Department feels this proposal is a wise idea. Yes, I realize we may arrive at our destination five minutes faster, but how about safety issues!

In the last month there has been (I have observed) an increase in accidents on the freeway. Raising the speed limit will only contribute to more accidents. People tend to drive 5 to 10 miles faster than the posted speed limits.

I wonder what the rate of accidents are in states with higher speed limits versus those states with lower speed limits?
