BOISE — Idaho Transportation Department is rebuilding three Interstate-84 interchanges in Ada County. Work has already started on the Gowen Road and Broadway Avenue interchanges east of Boise.
On Sunday, crews will begin working on the Meridian Road interchange.
Lanes will be restricted on I-84 under the Meridian Road interchange from 10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday. Overnight lane restrictions on I-84 will continue through the end of April. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph in the work zone on I-84. The speed limit on Meridian Road will remain 45 mph, but be reduced to 35 mph later in the project.
ITD is replacing the interchange with one similar to the Ten Mile Road interchange. The project includes widening the interstate to four lanes in both directions under the interchange and rebuilding I-84 between Meridian Road and Five Mile Road. Meridian Road also will be widened and dual left-turn lanes will be added for each I-84 ramp. The I-84, Broadway and Gowen interchanges in Boise are also being replaced at the same time.
Construction is expected to be completed by late 2015.
ITD Project Engineer, Jayme Coonce, said that over the next 22 months it will be very important for all motorists to slow down and pay attention in the work zone.
Please leave early if you are traveling on I-84 because the Meridian, Broadway and Gowen interchanges are now all simultaneously under construction, Coonce said in a press release. Moving interstate traffic safely through the Treasure Valley will rely on drivers planning ahead and being extra cautious.
Here are the four major projects Idaho Transportation Department has under construction in Ada County.
INTERSTATE 84 GOWEN ROAD INTERCHANGE: The $31 million project will widen Gowen to five lanes, replace the bridge over I-84, build new on- and off-ramps and improve turn lanes on Gowen, Federal Way and Eisenman Road. I-84 will be widened to three lanes in each direction between the Gowen and Broadway interchanges. The interchange was built in 1969. Since that time interchange traffic has increased from 5,650 to 44,500 vehicles per day.
I-84 BROADWAY AVENUE INTERCHANGE: The $53 million project will install a central traffic signal for all turning traffic, similar to the new interchanges at Vista Avenue in Boise and Ten Mile Road in Meridian. Other improvements include lengthening and widening the on- and off-ramps, widening I-84 to three lanes in each direction under the bridge, building two dedicated turn lanes for the eastbound on-ramp and adding new curbs, gutters and sidewalks. The interchange was built in 1969. Since then interchange traffic has increased from 8,850 to 70,000 vehicles per day.
I-84 MERIDIAN ROAD INTERCHANGE: This work will build an $50.8 million interchange with a central traffic signal for all turning traffic, similar to the Vista Avenue and Ten Mile Road interchanges. The new interchange will widen the Meridian Road overpass to three lanes in each direction, widen the interstate to four lanes in each direction under the interchange, add dual-left turn lanes on Meridian for each I-84 on-ramp, and add sidewalks and bicycle lanes on Meridian. The interchange was built in 1965. Traffic has increased from 15,000 to 128,000 vehicles per day.
IDAHO 16: This $112 million project will create a new 2.2-mile road, including a new Boise River bridge, to extend Idaho 16 from Idaho 44/State Street to U.S. 20/Chinden Boulevard near McDermott Road. Construction began in 2012 and should be completed in September. The project will provide another vital north-south link in the Treasure Valley. The new bridge over the Boise River the first new crossing in the area in 20 years is expected to serve 22,000 drivers a day once it opens. ITD does not have funding to connect Idaho 16 from Chinden to I-84.
