Phishing email scam targets businesses

Scammers are targeting businesses by sending emails claiming to be from the Taxpayer Advocate Service,  according to the Better Business Bureau. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is a branch of the Internal Revenue Service. The emails carry a bogus case number and say:

"Your reported 2013 income is flagged for review due to a document processing error. Your case has been forwarded to the Taxpayer Advocate Service for resolution assistance."

The scam is designed to dupe people into providing personal information, either by calling a number provided or by clicking on a link and filling out an online form.

Such scams in which identity thieves try to trick people into divulging personal or financial information by posing as a legitimate agency or business are called "phishing."

The BBB reminds taxpayers that the IRS does not call asking for payment.
