— Idaho Statesman Boise State football writer Chadd Cripe won first place in the Associated Press Sports Editors' 2013 contest for beat writing in the 30,001- to 75,000-circulation category.

Cripe received five of six first-place votes from APSE judges. Cripe's entry, based on his Boise State coverage in 2013, was one of 54 in the category, which recognizes the most authoritative, newsy and innovative coverage of a beat.

Cripe was also a top-10 finisher in 2012. Cripe is in his 13th year as the Statesman's Boise State football beat writer and is a voter in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

The Statesman sports staff earned a top-10 award for daily section and an honorable mention for its college football preview section.
