Baseball, softball teams keeping busy over spring break

STATESMAN STAFFMarch 27, 2014

Spring season is officially in full bloom, and baseball and softball fans will be served a buffet of games this week with the annual Buck's Bags Spring Baseball Classic and the Idaho Sporting Goods Softball Shootout getting underway in the Treasure Valley.

BASEBALL

An annual tradition since the early 1990s, the Spring Classic starts with games at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday. Twenty-seven teams will take the diamond at seven high schools (Nampa, Capital, Centennial, Vallivue, Borah, Eagle and Boise).

Unlike previous tournaments, which operated under group stage formats, each team will play four prescheduled games to avoid potentially facing regular-season opponents. Play will continue with doubleheaders Friday and will culminate with seven games at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Because of the revamped structure, the six programs with the highest winning percentage will be declared champions with total runs against used for tiebreakers.

Nampa coach Marcos Sanchez, who organized the tournament, said any 5A program is worth watching, but alluded that Capital, Eagle and Centennial are the upper echelon programs in the field.

SOFTBALL

For the third consecutive season, Centennial is the primary host to the largest tournament in the state - there are 32 teams from five classifications competing at four other venues (Meridian, Borah, Capital and Rocky Mountain).

Play begins at 10 a.m. Friday, and wraps up with eight games at 4 p.m. Saturday. Each team will play four pool-play games.

Centennial coach Suzy Spear said the appeal of the tournament is added exposure to unfamiliar competition, with the luxury of experimenting in nonconference play. Spear said Meridian and Mountain View are the teams to watch.

Additionally, a "Swing for a Cure" competition will be held to raise cancer awareness. Nine players from each program will participate in base running relays, corner throws and a home run derby at 6 p.m. Friday at Centennial.
