Nampa police say man with pipe went on vandalism spree

March 26, 2014

The 18-year-old man, whose name has not been released, reportedly broke out windows in vehicles and one trailer Wednesday afternoon along the 2500 block of Sundance Road and the 2200 block of West Karcher Road. Police tallied at least 15 victims by early evening.

The man, who lives in Nampa, was admitted to a local hospital for unspecified treatment Wednesday. He wasn't injured while being detained by police, said Sgt. Curt Shankel.

According to Shankel and details in a press release, Nampa police responded shortly before 4 p.m. to multiple calls about a man breaking vehicle windows with a large pipe. An officer who stopped in a parking lot and got out of his patrol car then saw the suspect approach and break a window in the patrol car with a pipe.

The man then threw the pipe at the officer - missing him - and tried to flee, Shankel said.

Police Wednesday evening were still investigating what led up to the spree and whether there are more victims. Shankel said it could be a couple of days before charges are filed.

People whose windows were damaged will have to pay for repairs themselves right now, Shankel said. "As charges come forward, we'll be able to then file for restitution and be able to get some of those losses recouped."
