Letter: HB 514 Editorial

March 22, 2014

Regarding The Statesman's "Our View" of Tuesday, March 11, it seems to me that it would have been more fair to those legislators that "deep-sixed" HB 514, not to mention being more thorough in your reporting, had you explained to your readers that there were reasons for voting against it that had nothing to do with an attitude of elitism, such as that found on line 32, page 4, which confuses the issue of carrying weapons in vehicles and another on line 12, page 5, allowing "any person" to carry a concealed weapon outside of city limits, which would include felons, the dangerously mentally ill, someone with a domestic violence history and so on.

I believe it would also have been reasonable to mention that at least one of the so-voting legislators (Sen. Elliott Werk) has drafted a "clean" bill to correct weaknesses such as those, while at the same time removing the special privilege regarding the carrying of a concealed weapon granted to elected officials. Perhaps you should retract your editorial or at least provide your readership with additional information to balance the equation.
