NCAA WRESTLING: BRONCO ADVANCES
Redshirt senior Jake Swartz (184 pounds) won two matches Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. The No. 6 seed opened with a 13-3 major decision over Phillip Joseph of Eastern Michigan. He then knocked off No. 11 seed Lawrence Thomas of Penn 2-0. Swartz will face Gabriel Dean of Cornell, the No. 3 seed, in Friday's quarterfinal. The two met earlier this season at the Las Vegas Invitational, and Dean earned a 4-2 decision in overtime. Senior heavyweight J.T. Felix pinned Virginia Tech's Ty Walz, then lost by pin to No. 9 seed Connor Medbery of Wisconsin.
NCAA SWIMMING: BSU IN THREE EVENTS
On the first day of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, the 200 freestyle relay team finished 24th in the prelims, the 400 medley relay was 26th and sophomore Sam Wicks was 45th in the 50 freestyle; freshman Brittany Aoyama was 50th in the same event.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WINS AT WBI
The Broncos beat Grand Canyon 52-51 in a first-round game of the Women's Basketball Invitational on Thursday night in Phoenix. Boise State (18-13) plays at Stephen F. Austin (21-12) at 6 p.m. Saturday. Miquelle Askew led the Broncos with 13 points, followed by Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego with 12. Deanna Weaver added seven points and 11 rebounds.
SOFTBALL HOSTS FRESNO STATE IN MOUNTAIN WEST OPENER
The Broncos (15-12) and Bulldogs (15-10) meet at 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Dona Larsen Park. The conference decides its automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament during the regular season, so every league game is critical. The Broncos went 8-2 during a pair of home tournaments the past two weekends.
MEN'S TENNIS HOSTS THREE MATCHES THIS WEEKEND
The 23rd-ranked Broncos are hosting Tennis Fest on Saturday and Sunday at the Appleton Tennis Center. The schedule includes Marquette at 10 a.m. Saturday, Montana in doubles at 6 p.m. Saturday, Montana in singles at 10 a.m. Sunday and Fresno State at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. There is free parking at the Liberal Arts Building, west of the tennis courts next to the Student Union Building.
