Rock excavation will bring rolling I-84 onramp closures

March 19, 2014

Rock excavation in the median of Interstate 84 east of Boise near the Stage Stop will cause rolling traffic closures for the eastbound ramps at Broadway, Gowen, Eisenman, the I-84 rest area, Blacks Creek and the East Boise port of entry.

The rolling closures will take place Thursday and Monday through Thursday of next week.

The closures will begin each day at about 1130 a.m. at the Broadway Avenue interchange and progress east. After the waiting traffic passes Broadway, the eastbound ramp will be reopened, with the rolling closure moving east.

There should only be a minimal impact on traffic, the Idaho Transportation Department says. There should only be about a 20-minute delay, with most areas clear and vehicles back to freeway speeds by 1 p.m.

A pilot car will guide eastbound traffic while crews clear I-84. The eastbound on-ramps will reopen when the pilot car reaches each interchange. Westbound I-84 also will experience rolling closures and delays from east of Simco Road to the blast site. The rock excavation will eliminate basalt rock outcroppings in the median and reduce the severity of crashes.
