LAS VEGAS Stacey Barr scored 28 points to lead Idaho to a 75-67 win over Seattle in the WAC women's basketball championship Saturday at the Orleans Arena. The Vandals repeated as champions, and will make their third trip to the NCAA Tournament in school history.
"The pressure was on this year," said Barr, a junior guard. "My big thing going into this game was to prove to everyone that last year wasn't a fluke."
Barr, who had 73 points combined in Idaho's three wins this week, was named Tournament MVP, while teammate Alyssa Charlston was named to the All-Tournament team. Charlston had 17 points in Saturday's win. Idaho improved to 25-8 on the season, and shot 46.9 percent in the win.
The Vandals wore black bands around the left shoulder of their jerseys in remembrance of sophomore guard Connie Ballestero's uncle, who passed away Thursday night in Las Vegas while visiting to see Ballestero play. Ballestero had six points and four assists in 40 minutes Saturday. Idaho will find out its tournament destination during the selection show, televised on ESPN, at 5 p.m. MT Monday.
The Idaho men's basketball team plays for the WAC championship against New Mexico State at 8 p.m. MT Saturday. The game is televised on ESPNU.
