Former Canyon County prosecutor John Bujak officially running for governor

Former Canyon County prosecutor John Bujak has filed to run for governor as a Libertarian.

In 2012 and 2013, Bujak faced four felony jury trials, but none of those juries convicted him. Misuse of public funds and false evidence trials stemming from his time as Canyon County prosecutor, ended in mistrials, an estate-handling theft charge ended in a not guilty verdict, and a second trial on misuse of public funds also ended in acquittal. His law license, voluntarily suspended during the prosecutions, was restored last August, and he has been practicing law in Eagle since then.

A federal grand jury in January indicted Bujak on bankruptcy fraud. He pleaded not guilty; a trial is set for May 6.

On his campaign website, Bujak explains how his Canyon County prosecutor experience led him to run for office: "When John challenged the Good Old Boys in order to create positive change in Canyon County, they retaliated by forcing him to resign from office. It was then that John realized the only way he would be able to really create positive change in government, would be to get rid of the Good Old Boy influence. That meant fighting to put Idaho back in the hands of the people."

In addition to incumbent Gov. Butch Otter, others running for the state's top spot include Republicans Harley D. Brown and Russell M. Fulcher; Democrats A.J. Balukoff and Terry Kerr; Constitutional Party candidate Steve Pankey and Jill Humble, an independent.
