'Avalanche Alley' still closed; officials waiting for storm to end

March 10, 2014

This photo from the Idaho Transportation Department shows the oft-closed stretch of Idaho 21 that has earned the nickname Avalanche Alley.

The 12-mile stretch of Idaho 21 dubbed "Avalanche Alley" was closed all weekend and won't reopen until after stormy weather eases and crews can fly over the area and see what happened over the weekend, the Idaho Transportation Department reports.

The flyover will likely happen Tuesday morning. Crews may set off explosives for controlled avalanches to protect maintenance workers before they start the clean up.

The stretch of 21 between Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit is frequently closed during the winter months. Travelers can call 5-1-1 for the latest road conditions.
