Letter: Common Core

February 25, 2014

According to a Feb. 3 guest opinion, Common Core standards could hurt Idaho kids. The article authored by Monty Pearce, Judy Boyle and Lawerence Denney from District 9 attempts to point out how education should be a state function; that states know best how to educate their children. Really? Seriously? Currently Idaho is tied for last in education funding. Past voting records do not support the theory that legislators will increase educational funding significantly.

I would suggest that these three legislators get to work representing the voters in their district, which encompasses Adams and Washington counties. Is everybody who applies for a job or a place to live treated fairly? Your counties have high rates of unemployment. Are you working to bring good-paying, steady jobs to your district? How about medical care in your rural areas? The list goes on and on. You are on the taxpayer’s dime at this time; please don’t waste our hard-earned money grandstanding for special interests.
