Idaho colleges roundup: Boise State men’s tennis team repeats as tournament champion

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The sixth-seeded and 41st-ranked Broncos (9-2) beat No. 37 VCU 4-2 on Sunday to earn their second straight Blue Gray National Tennis Classic championship. Boise State has won eight straight matches, all on the road. Freshman Brendan McClain, who gave the Broncos the lead with a straight-set victory, was named MVP of the tournament, and 90th-ranked Andy Bettles, who won the sportsmanship award, sealed the team win with a three-set victory over No. 73 Alexis Heugas. BSU beat three higher-ranked teams — also No. 36 Alabama and No. 21 Clemson — in the tournament.

BSU SOFTBALL: The Broncos (6-9) fell victim to a six-inning no-hitter from Nebraska’s Tatum Edwards, and the 11th-ranked Cornhuskers earned a 4-0 victory at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. BSU also lost 10-3 to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.

BSU WOMEN’S TENNIS: Boise State (4-4) fell 6-1 to Fresno State in its Mountain West Conference opener in Fresno, Calif.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO BASEBALL: The Coyotes (7-5) blanked Whitworth 7-0 in Caldwell.
