Elise Shenk and Tory Lane combined for 32 points to lead Homedale to the semifinals in a back-and-forth 58-52 win over the Teton Redskins to open state tournament play Thursday at Middleton High.
Shenk had 17 points to pace the Trojans, while Lane added 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Thursdays game saw nine lead changes and eight ties, but the Trojans 19-13 edge in the fourth quarter proved decisive. Homedale is seeking its second girls basketball state title and first since 1980.
Homedale will face Timberlake at 8 p.m. Friday at Middleton, while Filer and Priest River will play at 6:15 p.m. in the other semifinal. Filer topped Sugar-Salem 30-28, and Priest River downed Fruitland, the District Three champs, 56-34.
A pair of District Three teams moved on at the state tournament at Kuna High, which saw three of its four games Thursday decided by two points or less.
Cole Valley defeated Valley 36-34 in overtime, led by Madison Hollys 12 points. Cole Valley had a 37-28 rebounding edge, led by Lindy Westendorfs 11.
The Chargers will face Ririe at 6:15 p.m. in one semifinal Ririe won a 26-24 low-scoring affair over Soda Springs while Melba and Firth face off at 8 p.m. in the other semifinal. Firth beat District Three champion New Plymouth 44-43.
Melbas 44-27 win over Grangeville was by far the biggest margin of victory.
CLASS 1A DIVISION I
The Prairie Pirates ended Hagermans undefeated season with a 47-33 victory in Thursdays semifinals at Columbia High.
Hagerman came into the game 20-0 and was the last unbeaten girls team in the state.
Prairie will take on Grace at 8 p.m. in the semifinals after Grace took down Notus, 50-35. Lapwai and Genesee will play for a spot in the state championship game before that, at 6:15 p.m. Lapwai defeated Challis 68-40, and Genesee beat Rimrock 56-39.
CLASS 1A DIVISION II
Dietrichs quest for a fourth straight state championship is off to a strong start after the Blue Devils opened tournament play with a 47-29 win over Council at Nampa High. Jacey Shaw had 14 points, and Katee Hubert had 12 for Dietrich.
The Blue Devils take on Rockland at 1:15 p.m. in one semifinal after Rockland took out Kendrick 48-37. Mackay and Lighthouse Christian play at 3 p.m. in the other semifinal. Mackay blanked Nezperce 34-25 in overtime, and Lighthouse beat Tri-Valley 36-31.
