Letter: St. Luke’s

February 15, 2014

So, St. Luke’s “... just wants to lead?” President and CEO David Pate offers us a warm and fuzzy view of this metastasizing conglomerate.

If St. Luke’s were truly community-oriented, it would pay property taxes like the rest of us and stop sucking in other health providers into its tax-exempt fold, causing more tax shifts to residential and small-business property owners.

I would wager that courtroom discussion of the tax-exempt advantages of acquisitions, such as Saltzer Medical Group, is included in the sealed court documents it guards as “trade secrets.”

It doesn’t want you to know that its tax-exempt status is depriving Idaho school districts of hundreds of thousands of dollars and results in inflated tax bills for you.
