BOISE — Bill New organized the drag strip’s first event in the foothills northwest of Eagle on Highway 16 on July 28, 1968. He spent nearly a half century overseeing the growth of Firebird Raceway, which now hosts some of the largest drag racing events in the Northwest and has been named the NHRA Track of the Year three times. New also was instrumental in starting the annual Boise Roaster Show. A celebration of New’s life will take place at The Riverside Hotel from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22.
