Fish Rap: There’s a hint of spring, and ice fishing

rphillips@idahostatesman.comFebruary 13, 2014

Things are looking up in the fishing world. Temperatures are definitely warming and the weather looks decent for the weekend. It’s a good opportunity to hit some open water, or enjoy a day of ice fishing. There are ice fishing derbies at Magic Reservoir and at Lake Cascade. Both are run a little differently, but the gist of it is you sign up at either Tackle Tom’s on Main St. (Idaho 55) in Cascade, or West Magic Resort. Go fishing, and if you catch large trout or perch, you’re eligible for cash and prizes. To make it fun for all, there’s also raffles, and the Magic event features a fish fry. For details, see below or call Tackle Tom’s at 382-4367 or West Magic Resort at 487-2571.

Salmon River update

Here’s some recent intel from Amy Sinclair at Exodus Wilderness Adventures in Riggins: There is still an ice bridge just above Island Bar and another between Kelly and Van Creeks. Upstream there are ice bridges near the Howard Ranch and in between Carey and Vinegar Creek Boat ramps. Above Vinegar Creek, water had opened up through Long Tom hole (about 2 miles upriver from the ramp), but I believe that has probably closed back up with last week’s cold weather. We anticipate upriver access will begin to open sometime next week. Downriver, there is an ice bridge below the Time Zone Bridge and another just above the old Lucile boat ramp. Below Lucile there is one just downriver from the Steelhead Inn boat ramp and another big one in Box Canyon. With the exception of the Box Canyon ice bridge, the downriver ice bridges are rotting quickly and will probably be gone by the weekend.
