Letter: Add the Words

February 7, 2014

Once again, our closed-minded, bigoted Republican majority is refusing to Add the Words sexual orientation and gender identify to the Idaho Human Rights Act. They say it is a bad time to tackle this issue. And when, I ask, is a good time? There hasn’t been a “good time” in the last eight years; not even a hearing. Are they afraid it might pass? The majority of Idahoans think it should. Eighty-eight percent of Fortune 500 companies include sexual orientation in their nondiscrimination policies. It’s good for business.

For the past eight years we have run a polite, respectful campaign to Add the Words so that we will not be fired or denied housing or public accommodation for who we are. Many of us have run out of patience and respect for our not so illustrious Republican leadership. They are not listening, but merely staying behind closed doors with their heads in the sand. Hell (Michigan) did freeze this year, so let’s do it now and Add the Words.
