Letter: Cigarette tax

February 5, 2014

Idaho has one of the lowest cigarette taxes in the nation. The House Revenue and Taxation Committee has refused to approve a modest increase in the cigarette tax. This has nothing to do with the merits of the proposal. It has everything to do with ideology. The ultra-conservatives in Idaho’s House of Representatives are opposed to taxes of all kinds.

An increase in the price of cigarettes might discourage some young people from smoking. Our schools could use the money.
