Mountain View senior earns state’s top honor for cross country

MERIDIAN — Sam McKinnon was named the 2013-14 Gatorade Idaho Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. The 5-foot-7 senior won the individual 5A state championship in a time of 18 minutes, 26.31 seconds in the fall. She also finished fifth at the 2013 Nike Cross Northwest championships (18:14.5), earning a spot in the 2013 Nike Cross Nationals final, where she placed 22nd in 18:00.1. McKinnon is verbally committed to run for Oregon State. “Sam McKinnon is not only an exceptional athlete, she is also an exceptional person,” Mountain View coach Tracy Harris said. “She has persevered through some very difficult circumstances to once again rise to the top.”
