Boise State men's basketball opens Mountain West play with 86-79 win

January 4, 2014

Boise State started off Mountain West play on the right foot, but had to weather a strong comeback by the Fresno State Bulldogs. Boise State (11-3, 1-0) led by 24 in the first half, but saw its lead reduced to as little as six points in the final minutes. Ryan Watkins had 15 points and 17 rebounds for the Broncos, while Anthony Drmic had 19 points. The announced crowd at Taco Bell Arena was 7,527.

Halftime: Boise State used runs of 20-0 and 14-2 to take a commanding 46-25 halftime edge over Fresno State. Ryan Watkins had 12 of the Broncos' 27 rebounds. The Bulldogs had only 11 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Jeff Elorriaga, on his birthday, had 12 points at halftime to lead the Broncos. Freshman Nick Duncan had nine points off the bench.

Pre-game notes: Boise State junior Derrick Marks needs only two points Saturday to reach 1,000 for his career. He would become the 24th player in school history to accomplish the feat. ... Fresno State starting center Alex Davis was suspended for Saturday's game, and Karachi Edo started in his place.
