Nampa couple rings in 2014 with baby boy

Boise - The Idaho StatesmanJanuary 1, 2014

It didn’t take long for 2014 to become a big year in the lives of Nicole, and Scott Campbell.

Nicole Campbell, 23, went into labor on New Year’s Eve. Her son, Devin Paul Campbell, was born at 1:04 a.m. on New Year’s Day at St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center.

“The timing makes it an easy birth date to remember,” Nicole Campbell said. “It kind of represents a start to a new year.”

Devin Campbell was born a healthy 8 pounds, 13 ounces and just under 22 inches.  Scott Campbell, 25, said their first child, 2-year old Lucy, was giddy with anticipation of a new baby brother she could care for and share toys with — though Lucy thought she and her parents were heading to “the baby store” to pick him up.

“She didn’t exactly get where he was coming from, but she was excited,” Scott Campbell said.

The baby came four days before its due date. The Campbells scrapped plans to celebrate New Year’s Eve with a baby shower and a pizza party with relatives.

“Instead, we got to go to the hospital,” Nicole Campbell said.

Scott Campbell said Devin’s birthday will add a little emotional weight to future New Year’s Eve countdowns. He said being the father of the first Treasure Valley baby born in 2014 is enjoyable, though it’s hardly something he’d yearned for.

“It’s kind of fun to win a competition you didn’t know you were in,” he said.
