New tradition? The community New Year’s Eve event in Downtown Boise will culminate with a 16-foot, glowing foam potato dropping from the U.S. Bank building — a la Times Square — during the midnight countdown. The 60-second descent begins at 11:59 p.m.

The heart of Downtown. You’ll find two stages, street performers, food trucks, heated areas, beer tents, kids activities and more. Performers include Hollow Wood, Audio Moonshine, Matt Hopper and the Roman Candles.

What does it cost? It’s free, but a $50 VIP ticket gets you a seat in The Zone at CenturyLink Arena, 245 S. Capitol Blvd. (GroTato.com)

When and where? 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on 8th Street from Idaho to Front streets, Main Street between 9th Street and Capitol Boulevard, and at The Grove.
