Shaken or stirred, 2013 was a good year for spirits

As the calendar turns once again into a new year with reflections on the old one past, the spirits industry has given us plenty of new offerings for shaking and stirring cocktails.

Here are a few of my favorite cocktails from 2013.

DEWAR’S HONEY APPLE HIGHBALL

1-1/2 ounces Dewar’s Highlander Honey

2 ounces of pressed apple juice

1 wedge of fresh lime

Top with ginger ale or ginger beer

Squeeze wedge of lime over cubed ice in a small tumbler glass. Add Dewar’s Highlander Honey and pressed apple juice and top with ginger ale or ginger beer.

GRAN LUSSO EL PRESIDENTE

1 part Bacardi 8-Year-Old Rum

1 part Martini Gran Lusso

1 dash Orange Curacao

Maraschino cherry to garnish

Build cocktail in a mixing glass. Add ice. Stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

GRAN LUSSO MARTINEZ

1 part Bombay Sapphire Gin

1 part Martini Gran Lusso

1 dash maraschino liqueur

1 splash Angostura Bitters

Lemon peel or twist to garnish

Build cocktail in a mixing glass. Add ice. Stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

GRAN LUSSO ROB ROY

1 large chunk of ice

1 part Dewar’s Scotch Whisky

1 part Martini Gran Lusso

Orange peel or twist to garnish

Build drink in a cocktail glass with ice. Garnish and serve.

NEW AMSTERDAM CITRON AND SODA

1-1/2 ounces New Amsterdam Citron Vodka

4 ounces club soda

Lemon wedge for garnish

Fill a rocks glass with ice cubes. Add vodka and then top with club soda. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

NEW AMSTERDAM COCO BREEZE

1-1/2 ounces New Amsterdam Coconut Vodka

3 ounces pineapple juice

Pineapple wedge for garnish

Combine vodka and pineapple juice in a shaker with ice. Shake well and then strain into an ice-filled rocks or martini glass. Garnish with a wedge of pineapple.

NEW AMSTERDAM IMPERIAL POMEGRANATE

2 ounces New Amsterdam Gin

1 ounce pomegranate liqueur

2-3 slices each of muddled ginger, lemon and cucumber

1 ounce simple syrup

Pomegranate seeds for garnish

Combine, shake, and strain all ingredients into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with pomegranate seeds.
