Five seniors left their mark on the 2013 season by shattering school records and chasing down championship trophies. Today, in our 38th annual All-Idaho Football Team, all five are being honored as Players of the Year.

It’s not particularly unusual to see a record or two broken during a season.

But 11 by one player?

That’s the legacy running back Josh Buss of Mountain View, created as he dashed and thrashed his way through the 5A Southern Idaho Conference season, landing a spot in the 5A state playoffs and a scholarship to the University of Montana. Among the highlights, Buss had one 327-yard rushing game and finished his career with 47 touchdowns.

“What an unbelievable year that kid had,” said Highland’s Gino Mariani, one of the statewide coaches who voted in the Idaho Statesman’s All-Idaho Football Team.

Four other record-setting athletes earned Player of the Year honors, based on a vote of state coaches.

4A: Quarterback Anthony Marin led Skyview to its best season in history and broke nearly every school passing record along the way.

3A: Kaden Schmitt stepped into a starting role at quarterback, leading Shelley to back-to-back state championships while establishing a Russets single-season passing record.

2A: Wide receiver Hayden Hanson helped Declo make history with the Hornets’ second straight state title.

1A: Salmon River quarterback Leighton Vander Esch dominated the eight-man ranks, tying a state record for total TDs in a championship game with eight.
