Treasure Valley girls basketball: 2013-14 season preview

Here are capsules of all 19 teams in the 5A and 4A Southern Idaho conferences.

November 26, 2013

DESTINED TO WIN? Mountain View guard Destiny Slocum, with ball, was the 5A SIC player of the year as a freshman in 2012-13 after averaging 15.5 points per game. Slocum is the lone returning starter, but four Mavericks are back from last year's league runner-up squad. Rocky Mountain, which retains three senior starters, is favored by the league’s coaches to keep the 5A SIC title.

5A Southern Idaho Conference

BOISE BRAVES

Coach: Kim Brydges, ninth season

2012-13 record: 11-12, 9-9 5A SIC

Returning starters: Natasha Dacic, senior, forward (5.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg); Megan Lee, junior, guard (4.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg); Isabelle Hadden, sophomore, post (12.4 ppg, 9.3 rpg); Lydia Miles, junior, guard.

Team tidbit: The Braves return seven players from last year’s squad, which advanced to the state play-in game. Six-foot-2 Hadden and 6-0 Dacic give Boise an advantage on the boards.

BORAH LIONS

Coach: Jason Willer, second season

2012-13 record: 3-17, 2-16 5A SIC

Returning starters: Kayla Haley, senior, wing; Kel Bilger, sophomore, wing.

Team tidbit: With six lettermen back, Willer is hopeful the Lions can turn experience into a competitive season. Newcomers Kiana Corpus (freshman guard) and Rylee Randall (senior guard) are expected to make an impact.

CAPITAL EAGLES

Coach: Blas Telleria, eighth season

2012-13 record: 17-9, 11-7 5A SIC

Returning starters: Delaney Sauer, senior, forward; Khadija Neumeyer, senior, guard; Nicole White, junior, forward; Emilie Eckhart, junior, forward.

Team tidbit: Capital is coming off one of its best seasons in recent history, which included a District Three title and an appearance in the state semifinals. Four starters and eight lettermen return.

CENTENNIAL PATRIOTS

Coach: Cassie Bro, second season

2012-13 record: 14-12, 12-6

Returning starters: Dominique Williams, sophomore, guard; Grace Melgard, senior, forward.

Team tidbit: The Patriots are expected to contend for a conference title with the help of five returning lettermen and a strong group of newcomers. Dominique Williams and Tori Williams (freshman guard) — who are not related — have already been offered Division I scholarships.

EAGLE MUSTANGS

Coach: Cody Pickett, first season

2012-13 record: 6-16, 5-13 5A SIC

Returning starters: None

Team tidbit: Returning lettermen Jenny Stevens, Tori DiMattio, Kylee Coffin and Ali Snooks will help make Pickett’s transition easier. The former University of Washington and San Francisco 49ers quarterback coached the past two seasons at North Star Charter in Eagle.

MERIDIAN WARRIORS

Coach: Amos Lee, third season

2012-13 record: 18-7, 14-4

Returning starters: Ebony Norman, junior, forward; Carli Rice, junior, guard.

Team tidbit: Eight lettermen return from last year’s state-qualifying team, which finished third during the regular season. Guard play has carried the Warriors in recent seasons, but that could change this year.

MOUNTAIN VIEW MAVERICKS

Coach: Connie Skogrand, 11th season

2012-13 record: 19-7, 15-3 5A SIC

Returning starter: Destiny Slocum, sophomore, guard (15.5 ppg, 4 rpg, 4 apg, 3 spg).

Team tidbit: The Mavericks lost a large portion of last year’s team, but Slocum — the reigning 5A SIC player of the year — gives them a good base to work from along with returners Josie Hardy (senior forward), Drew Pikes (junior guard) and Renee Routhier (junior forward).

ROCKY MOUNTAIN GRIZZLIES

Coach: Emery Roy, second season

2012-13 record: 22-4, 16-2 5A SIC

Returning starters: Madi Kelly, senior, guard; Megan Hochstein, senior, post; Maya Rodgers, junior, forward.

Team tidbit: The Grizzlies won the 5A SIC regular-season title and the state consolation championship last season. Kelly, a Utah Valley commit, will lead a team that returns six lettermen.

TIMBERLINE WOLVES

Coach: Todd Simpson, second season

2012-13 record: 4-16, 2-16 5A SIC

Returning starters: Tara Hall, senior, guard (8 ppg); Malika Kasumu, senior, post (7 ppg, 8 rpg).

Team tidbit: Simpson is working to build confidence in a program that has not been to state in nine seasons. Early success for this inexperienced squad, which only returns three lettermen, could translate to a winning season.

VALLIVUE FALCONS

Coach: Neil Stutzman, first season

2012-13 record: 5-17, 4-14 5A SIC

Returning starter: Kylie Murphy, senior, point guard.

Team tidbit: Stutzman previously coached at Weiser, and will benefit from a young squad eager to learn under a new coach. The Falcons have three seniors and four returning lettermen.

4A Southern Idaho Conference

BISHOP KELLY KNIGHTS

Coach: Derek McCormick, seventh season

2012-13 record: 19-7, 12-4 4A SIC

Returning starters: Gabi Harrington, sophomore, wing; Raquelle Mouw, senior, forward; Mikaela Murgoitio, senior, post.

Team tidbit: Injuries to key returners Molly Adcox (out for the season) and Mickie Piechowski (could be back in February) mean newcomers will need to step up big for the defending state champs.

CALDWELL COUGARS

Coach: Tonia Burk, eighth season

2012-13 record: 5-17, 5-11 4A SIC

Returning starters: Kora Bower, sophomore; Tamika Russell, junior; Mariela Ruiz, senior; Kaylee Bower, senior.

Team tidbit: The Cougars hope to build on last year’s season with the return of four starters, many of whom ran cross country this fall to help prepare for basketball.

COLUMBIA WILDCATS

Coach: Driggs Jessup, fourth season

2012-13 record: 3-18, 3-13 4A SIC

Returning starters: Rhianna Birch, senior, guard (13 ppg); Chloe Curry, sophomore, guard; Gonya Lado, sophomore, guard.

Team tidbit: Jessup is working to improve a program that was 3-86 when he took over. The Huskies posted a school-record 45 points in a win last week over Emmett, and have benefited from quick play on both sides of the ball.

EMMETT HUSKIES

Coach: Katie Walton, second season

2012-13 record: 0-19, 0-16 4A SIC

Returning starters: Mimi Sanchez, senior, guard; Chancy McMillan, junior, forward; Kayla Jensen, senior, post.

Team tidbit: The Huskies have five lettermen back and three key newcomers who are expected to have an immediate impact — Sarah Adkinson, Jessica Lyter and Ashleigh Yates.

KUNA KAVEMEN

Coach: Alex Jensen, second season

2012-13 record: 12-11, 10-6 4A SIC

Returning starters: Michaelia Mills, senior, guard; Lexxie Berry, senior, guard; Allison Law, sophomore, post; Nicole Arizana, junior, point guard; Ruby Shreeve, senior, guard.

Team tidbit: Shreeve would have been a four-year starter, but will miss the season because of a torn ACL. Newcomers Emily Shreeve, Becca Ferris, Taylor Lashley and Lexie Hangle will compete for starting spots.

MIDDLETON VIKINGS

Coach: Andy Jones, 12th season

2012-13 record: 25-1, 16-0 4A SIC

Returning starters: D’Rae Tullock, senior, post (15.3 ppg, 8.7 rpg); Allison Cossins, senior, post (4.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg); Madison Brown, senior, guard (4.1 ppg, 2.1 apg).

Team tidbit: Last year’s state consolation champions welcome back six lettermen, making the Vikings contenders to win a sixth consecutive District Three title.

MOUNTAIN HOME TIGERS

Coach: Brent Keener, seventh season

2012-13 record: 6-17, 5-11 4A SIC

Returning starters: Jacci Cristobal, senior, guard (7 ppg); Madi Karst, senior, post (5 ppg, 4 rpg); Mattie Bennett, junior, guard (4 ppg, 3 rpg).

Team tidbit: Keener expects a core group of five returning lettermen to give the Tigers a boost, but said experience off the bench will be limited.

NAMPA BULLDOGS

Coach: Cam Long, 10th season

2012-13 record: 15-11, 10-6 4A SIC

Returning starters: Danielle Jardine, junior, post (14 ppg, 11 rpg); Deja Holland, senior, guard (7 ppg, 4 apg); Karissa Thueson, senior, post (6 ppg, 5 rpg); Madison Wells, junior, guard (6 ppg, 3 spg).

Team tidbit: The Bulldogs advanced to state last season and should be contenders to win a district title with seven returning lettermen.

SKYVIEW HAWKS

Coach: Cindy Pasta, 18th season

2012-13 record: 17-7, 11-5 4A SIC

Returning starters: Bailey Pasta, senior, guard; Kayla Turcato, junior post.

Team tidbit: Standout senior post Leah Bonner, the 2012 4A SIC player of the year, returns from an ACL injury and gives the Hawks a big boost inside. Nine players are back from last year’s team, making the Hawks a leading contender for a district championship run.
