Idaho colleges roundup: C of I’s Holt wins NAIA national title in cross country

LAWRENCE, Kan. — College of Idaho senior Hillary Holt (Mountain View High) outkicked rival Hannah Helker of Oklahoma Baptist to defend her title and lead the Coyotes to a second-place finish at the NAIA Women’s Cross Country National Championships on Saturday. Holt won the 5,000-meter race in 16:48 to claim her sixth individual NAIA title and seventh overall. Sisters Sora Klopfenstein (fourth with a 17:52) and Lila Klopfenstein (eighth in 18:05) also had top-10 finishes for the C of I. The C of I men finished 20th in a field of 23 teams.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY: Senior Natalie Evans finished 60th (6k in 22:14.1) at the NCAA Division II Championships in Spokane.

C OF I VOLLEYBALL: No. 25 Rocky Mountain beat the No. 21 Coyotes 25-23, 25-21, 18-25, 19-25, 15-7 in the opening round of the NAIA Championships in Caldwell. The C of I finishes the season 18-10.

BOISE STATE VOLLEYBALL: Alyssa Gammel and Taylor Murphey combined for 36 kills as the Broncos (13-16, 7-12 Mountain West) knocked off UNLV 19-25, 25-18, 30-28, 16-25, 15-12 in Las Vegas.

NNU VOLLEYBALL: The Crusaders (18-6, 14-4 GNAC) beat St. Martin’s 25-19, 25-23, 25-16 in the regular season finale in Nampa, and now await a possible invite to the NCAA Division II Championships.

C OF I MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Coyotes (7-2) beat Montana Western 81-76 in overtime to claim the unofficial title of the NNU/C of I Invitational Classic in Nampa.

NNU MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Crusaders (1-3) went through a 12›-minute shooting drought and lost to Colorado-Colorado Springs 97-70 in the finale of the NNU/C of I Invitational Classic in Nampa.

NNU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Crusaders (4-0) rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second half to beat Montana Western 73-60 in Nampa.

IDAHO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Junior guard Stacey Barr had 21 points and 16 rebounds as the Vandals (3-1) beat UC Irvine 68-63 in their home opener.

C OF I SWIMMING AND DIVING: The Coyotes beat Willamette 146-114 and lost to Pacific 158-102 in a triangular dual.
