Idaho colleges: Boise State's Bates named region’s top athlete

— Redshirt junior Emma Bates was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Women’s Cross Country West Region Athlete of the Year. The honor is the first of its kind in her career. Bates, from Elk River, Minn., earned the honor by votes from NCAA Division I coaches. Bates and men’s teammate Jeff Howard will compete at the NCAA Championships on Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO/CASCADE CONFERENCE WOMEN’S SOCCER: Midfielder Summer Jackson (Mountain View High) has been named to the All-Cascade Conference second team. Three other athletes from Boise, representing other Cascade schools, also made the team: Midfielder Rachel Saleen (Capital High, Northwest, first team), forward Tera McDonough (Borah High, Corban, second team) and forward Julie Zamzow (Bishop Kelly High, Southern Oregon, second team).
