I see snow — is it ski season yet?

When are the resorts opening? The sweepstakes for Idaho ski areas’ earliest opener this year appears to be going to Lookout Pass on the Idaho/Montana border. Lookout announced it is opening on Thursday.

Anyone else? Grand Targhee near Driggs is scheduled to open on Friday. Schweitzer Mountain Resort in Sandpoint is getting lots of snow and could open by the weekend, but won’t make a decision until later in the week, a spokesperson said.

What about the local resorts? Sun Valley is slated to have its traditional opening on Nov. 28, and Tamarack announced its opening day will be Friday, Dec. 13. Both those resorts make snow.

What about Bogus Basin, Brundage and Soldier Mountain? They’re up to the good graces of Mother Nature because they have to rely on natural snow. Storms are expected this week, but it might take some pretty big ones for those resorts to be open by Thanksgiving. Brundage is fairing best with about 15 inches on the summit, Bogus about 4 inches, and no report from Soldier Mountain’s website.
