GIRLS BASKETBALL SEASON BEGINS TODAY

Skyview and Rocky Mountain square off in a nonconference matchup, marking the first game of the season. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m. at Skyview in Nampa. Here are the rest of this weekend’s 5A and 4A openers:

Friday: Columbia at Boise, 7:30 p.m.

Saturday: Capital at Kuna, 7:30 p.m.; Centennial at Bishop Kelly, 7:30 p.m.; Eagle at Nampa, 7:30 p.m.; Mountain View at Mountain Home, 7:30 p.m.; Middleton at Rocky Mountain, 7:30 p.m.; Timberline at Emmett, 7:30 p.m.

KUNA WRESTLER COMMITS TO BSU

Three-time 4A state champion Michael Cook will sign with the Broncos on Thursday, Kuna coach Patrick Owens announced. Cook also made official visits to Northern Colorado and Oregon State before deciding on Boise State.

Kuna teammate Casey Cobb, a two-time state champion, gave a verbal commitment to Navy, and also received interest from Columbia and Princeton.

POD SYSTEM INSTATED FOR 5A SIC IN 2014-15

With Columbia and Nampa set to join the 5A Southern Idaho Conference beginning with the 2014-15 school year, league officials have decided to form two pods for competition in football, basketball, baseball and softball. Athletic directors finalized those pods Tuesday:

Pod A: Rocky Mountain, Borah, Capital, Centennial, Nampa and Timberline.

Pod B: Mountain View, Boise, Vallivue, Eagle, Meridian and Columbia.
